Senate Confirms Anna Gomez as the Fifth FCC Commissioner

· FCC

On September 7, 2023, the Senate voted 55-43 to confirm Democrat Anna Gomez as the fifth FCC Commissioner. This seat had stood empty for Biden's term to date (about 2-1/2 years), due to a contentious battle over the President's prior nominee Gigi Sohn. Ms. Sohn had withdrawn her name in March 2023.

President Biden nominated Ms. Gomez in June 2023. She is an FCC veteran that I served with at the FCC, when she advised the Common Carrier bureau on legal matters. She also served under Chairman Bill Kennard, as his Legal Advisor, and as Deputy Chief of the International Bureau. Later, in other federal service, Ms. Gomez advised the State Department on international information and telecommunications matters. She is no stranger to business, having served as a VP of Government Affairs for Sprint - Nextel, and working at two law firms, Arnold and Porter and Wiley Rein.
